The group sings mainly in German, less often in English (including for Anna Nurmi), as well as in Finnish (for example, the song “Vankina” from the single “ Der Morgen Danach ”, the first verse “The Turning point” and the introduction of the song “ Schakal ") and Latin (fragments in the songs" Mutatio Spiritus "and" Sanctus "). In the Russian version of the song “ I Lost My Star ”, the chorus is performed in Russian, the Mexican edition of the album Echos contains a version of the track “ Durch Nacht und Flut ” with a fragment in Spanish.

Title

Tilo explains the origin of the name of his group:

«There used to be such masses that were written about a won war or coronation, a mass about death, etc. These masses had strict components that should always be present. Lacrimosa is part of the requiem. It comes from the Latin "Lacrima" - tears, "mosa" - current, and the direct translation of "current tears" means "sad", "painful", "suffering". I like to listen to Mozart, who wrote a marvelous requiem , which was ordered to him anonymously. He felt very bad in terms of health, and the story tells that he had already written this requiem as for himself and wanted to complete his creative journey with it. When Lakrimoza was completed, in the evening he held a rehearsal with his musicians and in this connection he became exhausted and died at night.

“ Lacrimosa ” is part of a requiem that begins with the stanza “Lacrimosa dies illa” - “that day is full of tears”.

Music Style

Tilo wolff

Lacrimosa began in 1990 with darkquave style. In this direction, the first three studio albums of the group are sustained: Angst , Einsamkeit and Satura . From the fourth album, Inferno , there is a change of style towards gothic metal. Starting with the album “Stille”, Lacrimosa draws orchestras for recording, in connection with which all the subsequent albums of the group are a mixture of gothic metal and symphonic metal . Schattenspiel , being a collection of songs written in the entire history of Lacrimosa, contains compositions sustained both in darkwave-style and in the spirit of gothic metal and symphonic metal.

Tilo Wolff himself does not agree with the definition of his music as goth-rock / goth-metal:

These styles may be suitable for some songs, but definitely not for LACRIMOSA as a whole! Suppose the album “Revolution” begins with symphonic rock (“Irgendein Arsch ist immer unterwegs”) passes through experimental and hard alternative rock (“Verloren”, “Rote Sinfonie”), through classical music with the influence of electronics (“Refugium”), and here we see rock and roll (“Feuerzug”) and metal electronics (“Revolution”). I am not a servant of the image! I want to make music, not get stuck in the same style! [3]

Design

All the covers of the group are made in black and white and echo the logo.

The main character of all the drawings is the harlequin. It is also on our logo. This clown is a kind of symbol, a kind of comic reflection of our music. It combines all the feelings that exist in our work. All of our CDs are designed by artist Shtelio Diamantopoulos. His black and white drawings are always built on contrast, as are our songs.

Texts

Anne nurmi

Tilo Wolff:

I absolutely know exactly what I want to express with my songs. Therefore, Lacrimosa is not a group in the usual sense. I have no desire to come with musicians to the rehearsal room for experiments. I do not set myself the goal of becoming the best group in the world at any cost. It is about being able to express your feelings as faithfully as possible and no one can help me with this. Of course, there are cases in the studio when musicians do something original, and if I like it, I accept it. But this concerns, rather, arrangements, than compositions. All texts, of course, are based on events that happened either with me, or in a very close circle in which I was drawn. I can not write texts about what happened to someone else, even if this person is very close to me, if only it had nothing to do with me. I use in my texts a lot of images, allegories, which, of course, should not be misunderstood. You can not get hung up, taking literally.

Along with the German texts on their plates there are texts in English.

These are most often my texts, because it is more convenient for me to express my feelings and thoughts.
Anne Nurmi

There are certain texts that cannot be expressed in German, because it is a very sensitive language. This is a very good language for ambiguities, deep clarity, and it is very good to describe some things on it. Moreover, this is my native language, and therefore it is possible to better express my thoughts. This is partly impossible in other languages, and partly expressed in a different way. But there are certain things that cannot be expressed in German, and such a text as in the song “Copycat” would absolutely be impossible in German, it would not work. Therefore, it is wonderful that in this case you can turn to another language. By the way, I absolutely do not understand many musicians who use English, and claim that they attach great importance to the texts, although they do not speak it in half. It seems that they write in English just because it just sounds cooler.
