- February 1 - the crash of the space shuttle "Columbia" . The ship exploded on landing; all seven crew members died.
- May 16 - total lunar eclipse in the equatorial zone of the Earth (phase 1.13) [1] .
- May 31 - annular solar eclipse (maximum phase 0.9384) [2] .
- June 10 - the Delta-2 launch vehicle, with the Spirit rover on board, successfully launched from the launch site at Cape Canaveral as part of the Mars Exploration Rover project.
