  • January 16 - the last start of the shuttle Columbia , 15:39 UTC .
  • February 1 - the crash of the space shuttle "Columbia" . The ship exploded on landing; all seven crew members died.
  • May 16 - total lunar eclipse in the equatorial zone of the Earth (phase 1.13) [1] .
  • May 31 - annular solar eclipse (maximum phase 0.9384) [2] .
  • June 10 - the Delta-2 launch vehicle, with the Spirit rover on board, successfully launched from the launch site at Cape Canaveral as part of the Mars Exploration Rover project.
  • July 7 - the second Mars Rover Opportunity Mars rover was launched.
  • October 15 - the first spacecraft with an astronaut on board, Shenzhou 5, was launched in the PRC .
  • November 9 - total lunar eclipse in the southern hemisphere (phase 1.02) [1] .
  • November 23 - total solar eclipse (maximum phase 1,0379) [3] .

  • April - The Human Genome Project announced the almost complete sequencing of the human genome .
  • June 2 - launch of the Mars-Express spacecraft of the European Space Agency , designed to study Mars .
  • September 27 - the launch of Smart-1 , the first automatic station of the European Space Agency for the study of the Moon .
