History
The provinces were formed in 1946 when Madagascar was a French colony. Initially, there were five, and the sixth (Antsiranana) was created a little later, but before the 1957 election [6] .
The provinces were abolished as a result of the adoption of a new administrative-territorial division at the 2007 constitutional referendum . The transitional period to the new administrative division into 22 districts [2] amounted to 30 months (until October 2009). But in the new Constitution, adopted at the 2010 constitutional referendum, provinces reappeared [1] .
