The Vatican team consists of Swiss guardsmen , members of the papal council and the curators of museums located on the territory of the Vatican. The team held only 4 international matches in its history - with the team of Monaco : in 2002, 2011, 2013 and 2014 (0: 0, 1: 2, 0: 2, 0: 2), as well as several friendly meetings with amateur clubs. In particular, in 2006 the Vatican team played a match with the Swiss football club Wollmond and won 5: 1.
In 2010, the Vatican organized a team for the match with Palestine , but it was not the Vatican team, but a team made up of Roman clergy. Thus, to consider the defeat in this game (1: 9) as the largest in the history of the team would be a mistake. In the same year, the Vatican Football Federation made an offer to the famous coach Giovanni Trapattoni to lead the team, but he, having spent only one match in the papal team's coaching chair, was forced to refuse, citing a contract with the national team of Ireland .
Despite its tiny size, the Vatican has its own football field - St Peter's Stadium , accommodating no more than 500 people. Therefore, the Vatican team spends most of their matches at the larger in Albano Laziale , which it shares with the Italian Serie D .
The Vatican has its own football league, which is played by such teams as Santos, Vatican Museum, Gendarmerie, Guard, etc., there are only 8 participants. There is also a championship called the Clericus Cup, which is attended by seminarians and priests - representatives of Catholic schools from different countries. They fight for the cup of the Holy See - a molded soccer ball mounted on two boots and crowned with a hat worn by Catholic priests [ significance of fact? ] .
