Tapio Koryus was born on February 10, 1961 in Vekhkalahti (now part of the city of Hamina ).
In the 80s, he was one of the country's most famous javelin throwers, but he did not achieve any success on the international arena until the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . At the Olympic competitions, Corusse took almost the entire second place in the tournament, but in his last attempt he succeeded in a brilliant throw at 84 m 28 cm, which brought him Olympic gold. The second place was taken by young Jan Zhelezny , who then became a world leader in javelin for a long time, and Seppo Ryat , the third compatriot of Koryus.
Seoul success remained the only one in the athlete’s career. Soon he completed his speeches and focused on coaching. He successfully coached many famous Finnish javelin throwers, including Michaela Ingberg .
