Content

Spread

Representatives of the genus are common in moderately warm and subtropical areas of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres . The greatest species diversity is observed in North America [2] .

Biological description

Representatives of the genus - deciduous woody plants : shrubs or small trees . The leaves are alternate, with very small deciduous stipules . Leaf blades are not leathery, with 5–15 pairs of lateral veins; the edges of the plates are either solid or finely toothed [3] .

Actinomorphic flowers , small, bisexual, collected in axillary semi-umbrellas or bunches. The cup is fleshy, five-fold or five-blade. The corolla consists of five short and wide petals of yellowish-white, yellowish or greenish color. Five stamens , they are opposite to the petals. Gynetsy coenocarpe. The ovary is three-capped, with a short column ; three-blade stigma [3] .

Fruits are juicy, in the shape of a ball, bony-like (with one seed), with a diameter of 6 to 9 mm , in a mature state - violet-black. seeds - with a straight germ , scant endosperm . Seeds have a lenticular shape - unlike members of the genus Zhoster ( Rhamnus ), in which the seeds are more or less spherical [3] .
