Srebarna Nature Reserve ( Bulgaria. Srebarna Nature Reserve ) is a nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria , near the village of the same name, 16 km west of the city of Silistra , 2 km south of the Danube . The reserve includes Lake Srebirna and its environs, this area lies on the main migratory route of migratory birds between Europe and Africa, called "Via Pontica". The reserve was established in 1948, covers an area of 600 hectares, another 540 hectares is a buffer zone.

Content
History
There are several legends about the origin of the name of the lake, according to one of them, the lake is named for the khan who died in these places in an unequal battle with the Pechenegs . According to another legend, a boat full of silver floated off the lake. According to the third version, the lake was named because of the illusion of silver spilled over the lake at the full moon.
In 1863, the Austro-Hungarian traveler and scientist Felix Kanitz , fascinated by the diversity of the local world of birds, called him "bird Eldorado."
According to the Bucharest Peace Treaty of 1913, the territory of South Dobrogea with the reserve located on it was transferred to Romania. In 1940 the territory was returned to Bulgaria.
The first Bulgarian explorer of the nature of the lake was Alexi Petrov, who visited this place in 1911.
After the construction of the dam on the Danube in 1949, the lake began to chalk, the depth fell from six meters to one and a half. Over one million leva was spent on the restoration of the lake.
Lake
Srebarna is a large lake formed in a wide karst basin . Depth is from 1 to 3 meters, area - 2 square meters. km Partially boggy. The shores of the lake are covered with reeds, reaching 6-7 m in height.
Flora and Fauna
Almost 100 species of birds nest in the reserve, some of them are recognized as endangered. Approximately 80 species of birds fly to the lake for the winter. Among the most noteworthy birds are the curly pelican , great white, red and black herons , loaf , spoonbill .
The lake is home to 6 species of fish and 35 species of amphibians.
Museum
Near the reserve is a museum, which presents an exposition about the inhabitants of the reserve. The museum also serves as a base for research on the inhabitants of the lake.
