Westerwinkel

View from the south

The castle on the water Westerwinkel (German: Schloss Westerwinkel ), built in the Baroque style , is located in Aschberg , near Münster . The first mention of Westerwinkel occurs in 1225 .

Built in its current form in the middle of the XVII century , Westerwinkel is one of the earliest baroque castles in Westphalia. It is constructed in the form of an almost closed quadrangle. A slightly moody castle, standing on the water, protected by a double system of trenches and strong high walls, which was not superfluous during the turbulent times of the Thirty Years War, is decorated with rows of small windows with shutters painted traditionally for these places.

The castle-fortress has replaced many owners in its nearly eight hundred-year-old century. Today it is owned by the Counts von Merfeldt, who came here in 1555 in the person of Hermann von Merfeldt, who married Ursula von Dipenbrock, who inherited Westerwinkel. Information about how he looked then, and how attractive he was, as an inheritance, was not preserved.

In 1663, construction began on the castle in its current form, Baroque.

The castle is surrounded by a park in the English landscape style, and it has a golf course.
