Career

During his career as a player, Brückner played for Sigma Olomouc and Banik Ostrava . He then coached Banik and the Czech youth team. Having become the head coach of the main Czech national team after its failure to qualify for the 2002 World Cup under the leadership of Josef Hovanets , Bruckner did not miss a single major international tournament with his team and brought it to second place in the FIFA rankings . For the first time in sixteen years, the Czech Republic in 2006 took part in the World Championship . Despite the unexpected absenteeism from the group, the Bruckner contract was extended for two years.

During the selection for the European Championship, which was hosted by Austria and Switzerland, the Czechs were identified in Group D, where their teams were Germany , Ireland , Cyprus, Wales , Slovakia and San Marino . Despite criticism and rumors about the imminent resignation of the head coach [2] , the Czech Republic, under the leadership of Bruckner, managed to take first place in the group, beating the current bronze medalists of the World Championship - the Germans. However, performances at the championship again proved unsuccessful. In the decisive match, the Czechs lost to the national team of Turkey with a score of 2: 3 and could not overcome the group stage.

March 21, 2008, before the start of the European Championship, Karel Brückner announced his intention to leave the post of coach of the Czech Republic after the end of the tournament [3] . In July 2008, he led the Austrian national team. [4] But in March 2009, Bruckner was forced to complete his coaching career due to health problems [5] [6] . Under his leadership, the Austrian national team in official matches produced 1 victory, suffered 2 defeats and once played a draw.

The distinctive sign of Bruckner is his hairstyle, which is why in the Czech Republic he is called Klekpetr on the figure of an Indian chief in one of the novels of Karl May .
