Biography
In 1936, together with Henri Langlois (in 1934 they co-authored the documentary film "Underground") founded the largest film archive - French Cinematheque [1] . In 1938–1945 he was executive secretary of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), in 1945–1953 - general secretary of the Institute of Scientific Cinema.
He became famous for the documentaries “Animal Blood” ( 1949 ) and “House of Disabled People” ( 1951 ), where scenes of extreme cruelty and ugliness were shown with icy impassivity. He transferred the same intonation to his first feature film “ Head against the Wall ” ( 1958 , according to Herve Bazin ), the action of which was unfolding in a psychiatric hospital. The film caused a wide public discussion about the need to humanize psychiatry. Jean-Luc Godard said of this picture: "The film is crazy about the crazy, but a film of insane beauty" [1] .
He also shot "black" films close to horror films , and science-fiction films. Created several movie screens. Since the 1970s, he worked mainly in the theater and on television [1] , and in 1975 he directed a series based on his most famous film, Eyes Without a Face.
According to Jacques Lursel, the transition of Francois from his excellent documentaries to the full-length format was a big loss for French cinema: “The director’s causticity, his fruitful aggressiveness and rigidity, ingenious irony and mastery of subtexts have disappeared without a trace in the heavy film adaptations of classics and alterations of silent adventure TV series, filmed by him from 1958 to 1973 " [2]
