Geography

The Neftechalinsky district in the north borders with the Shirvan, and in the south with the Gizilagach State Nature Reserve, it is considered a flat area. The territory of the district is located 22 meters below sea level. Anthropogenic deposits are common. On the territory of the district is the island of Kyurkos, which, due to a drop in sea level, sometimes turns into a peninsula. There are several mud volcanoes. As a result of the activities of mud volcanoes in the area, the island of Kur Dasha was formed. On the border with the Salyan region there is a salt lake Duzdag.

History

Neftechalinsky district was formed as an administrative region within the Azerbaijan SSR on February 11, 1940 . Until that time, it was part of the Salyan region , and during the year as part of the Hillinsky district, organized on January 24, 1939 , Neftechala, being an exclusively industrial district, was liquidated in December 1959 and annexed to the Salyan region . After 4 years in 1963, it was separated from the Salyan region and became the Neftechalinsky industrial zone. Such a mixed management system did not justify itself, and the Neftechalinsky district was again liquidated in 1965 and became part of the Salyan region . After 7 years, on April 27, 1973, at the initiative of the head of the republic, Heydar Aliyev, the district was again separated into an independent administrative territorial entity.

Climate

The climate of the region is moderately hot, semi-desert with arid summers. Frequent winds cause dramatic climate change. Semi-desert steppe and saline soils are widespread in the region. Mint, wild rose, licorice, horsetail, chamomile and other plants grow in the region.

Economics

Neftchala is known for oil, gas and fish. The basis of the economy of the region is cotton growing, grain growing, fodder breeding and animal husbandry. In 1872, the first oil well was drilled. According to the indicators of 2009, 23 industrial enterprises operate in the region. The share of the private sector in the volume of industrial production is 87.8%.

Mainly in the mining industry, mining is important, raw cotton processing, brick production for construction, supply and distribution of gas, non-ferrous metal production. The region has an oil and gas industry, a fish processing plant Bankya, an iodine-bromine plant, canneries and other enterprises. According to the results of 2006, there are 17 enterprises in the region.

Neftechalinsky iodine-bromide plant

In 1931, the first iodine plant in Neftechal was put into operation.

Professor O. Yu. Magidson noted this event: “The search for cleaner waters, on which it is easiest to implement the adsorption principle that we have given, led in 1929 to the finding of gushing Neftechalin waters. If coal was quickly clogged with naphthenic and other organic substances in Kishlinskaya or Surakhano-Ramaninskaya water, then the same coal could be used on Neftechalinskaya water many times with a very gradual decrease in its activity. B. P. Tumilo-Denisovich developed a simple design of adsorption columns filled with coal. Using activated carbon from the Moscow Gas Plant, rather large grains, the passage of water through the column could be made almost unimpeded; for good capture of iodine (90%) it was necessary to have 3-4 2-meter columns connected in series. In 1929, B.P. Tumilo-Denisovich built a small pilot plant in Neftechal (150 km from Baku at the mouth of the Kura River ), and then in 1930 an industrial type plant. The ease and speed of development was mainly due to the already accumulated experience in the extraction of iodine, which came from our laboratory at the NIHFI and got the maximum development at the Experimental iodine station on Beyuk-Shore, where the negative properties of water gave a great positive experience. The Neftechalinsky plant quickly expanded its capacity to the full use of the available water and caused special drilling for water. Modern capacity is limited exclusively by the available water reserves. Neftechalinsky plant is currently the largest producer of iodine. In 1932, the use of the second significant base of iodine industry, the waters of Cheleken Island near Krasnovodsk, was begun. These waters are very similar to Neftechalinsky, but they are much more accessible than in Neftechal. In addition to the wells drilled for oil but supplied with water, water horizons lie only at a depth of 150 m, therefore, they can easily be opened. There is every reason to believe that Cheleken will become the most important place for iodine production in the future, especially since the Cheleken waters contain 15-20 times more bromine than iodine, and are also rich in radioactive elements. ”

Historical Monuments

In the Neftechalinsky district there are 750 Palaces of Culture, Museum of History and Local Lore, etc. There are 34 mosques in the area. In the area there are monuments dating back to the 19th century, the Fatimei-Zyakhra mosque in the village of Hıly; the administrative building of the Fish Factory, the church, the Heydar Almazov Mausoleum, built in 1894, erected in 2004 in honor of the Turkish soldiers who died in 1918, is a monument. The district also has a memorial complex in honor of the war of 1941-1945, complexes dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, a monument erected in 1998 in honor of the martyrs "January 20".
