Biography

The first two Olympics

Georges Andre was involved in athletics and rugby: as a rugby player he played for the Stud France and Racing 92 clubs in the position of the left wing midfielder. At the 1908 Games in London, Andre participated in two disciplines. He divided the second place in the high jump and the fifth position in the high jump from the spot. At the next 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Andre competed in six disciplines. He became the seventh in the high jump from the spot, in the long jump from the 14th place, in the decathlon 17th, in the pentathlon 22nd, in the 23rd high jump and stopped in the semifinals in the 110m hurdles .

Two Olympics after World War I

Andre participated in the First World War and was captured. After six escape attempts, he was able to return to his troops and became a military pilot. After the war ended, Andre took part in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp . He became a bronze medalist in the 4x400 m relay , fourth in the 400 m hurdles and stopped at the semifinals at a distance of 400 m .

Andre decided to participate in the next Olympics in 1924 , which took place in his hometown of Paris , and he was chosen to pronounce the Olympic vow during the opening ceremony of the Games. The athlete repeated his success of the previous Games and again became the fourth in the 400 m hurdles.

After Games

With the outbreak of World War II, Andre wanted to become a pilot again, but since he was too old, he joined the infantry and was killed in battles near Tangier .

His son Jacques fought as part of the Normandy-Niemen squadron during the years of World War II, and received the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945.
