Geography
The island is 1300 km long, its width varies from 50 to 230 km, its total area is 227 969.74 km² [4] , approximately 60% of the total area of Japan. Honshu Island is slightly smaller than the island of Great Britain ( British Isles ). The coastline is 5450 km long.
The northernmost point of the island is Cape Omazaki (41 ° 33 ′ N), the southernmost is Cape Kuresaki (33 ° 26 ′ N). The length of the island from north to south is 903.5 km. The westernmost point is Cape Bisyanokhan (130 ° 51 ′ E), the easternmost is Cape Todogasaki (142 ° 4 ′ E). The length of the island from west to east is 986 km.
The relief of Honshu is mountainous. Among the mountains there are many volcanoes. The largest of them - Fuji (3776 m), is a symbol of Japan. Thanks to him, Honshu is the 7th highest island in the world. The largest river of the island is Sinano . Honshu's climate is very diverse - from continental in the north to subtropical in the south. The mountains of the island create a difference in the climate of the southeastern (Pacific) and northwestern (Sea of Japan) parts of the island.
Earthquakes often occur at Honshu, as the island is at the junction of three formation plates.
Regions and Prefectures
The island is conditionally divided into five regions: Tyugoku (western), Kansai (southern, east of Tyugoku), Chubu (central), Kanto (eastern) and Tohoku (northern). The regions are divided into 34 prefectures, including Tokyo . The structure of the prefectures, in addition to the territory of Honshu, includes some small islands, including Ogasawara , Sado , Izu-Oshima , Awaji .
