Biography
Born into a poor Christian family in Bekaa Kafra (northern Lebanon). At baptism received the name in honor of St. Joseph, bore the surname Mahlouf. At three years old he was left without a father, brought up by his uncle. At 23, he entered the monastery of St. Marona in Annaya. While studying at the seminary, he was a student of St. Nimattullah Kassab Al-Hardini . He took eternal vows in 1853 , ordained to the priesthood in 1859 , and from 1875 led the life of a hermit . He died after a short illness on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1898 .
Name Etymology
The monastic name that Yussef Mahlouf took - Charbel (Sarvil) - was taken by him in honor of the 2nd century AD martyr. and consists of roots with the meaning of “king” and “God.”
Beatification and canonization
During his lifetime, Father Charbel had a reputation as a saint. He was often approached for advice and blessing. He himself was distinguished by great devotion to the sacrament of the Eucharist and the rigor of monastic austerities.
A few months after his funeral at the monastery cemetery over the grave began to see a glow. The body from which sweat and blood stood out was moved to a special tomb, which became the site of many pilgrimages . In 1925, Pope Pius XI allowed the process of beatification of Fr. Charbel In 1927 and 1950, his relics were myrrh-streaming , a number of miraculous healings are attributed to him. Beatification ( 1965 ) and canonization ( 1977 ) were made by Pope Paul VI . St. Liturgical Memorial Day Charbel - July 24; in addition, since 1993, on the 22nd day of every month, public worship services have been held at Annaya Monastery in his honor.
Miracles

Many miracles occurred after the death of the saint. One of the most famous is the case of Nohad El Shami, a 55-year-old woman suffering from paralysis. On the night of January 22, 1993, she saw in a dream two Maronite monks standing by her bed. One of them laid hands on her neck and performed an operation on her while the second put a pillow under her neck. Waking up, Nohad found two wounds on her neck. She fully recovered and was free to walk. She believed that she was operated on by St. Charbel, but she did not recognize the second monk. The next night, she again saw the saint in a dream. He said: “I did the surgery for you to see and their faith return. I ask you to attend the monastery on the 22nd of each month and regularly participate in masses for the rest of your life. ” According to popular belief, the second monk was St. Maron .
