Fichev, Nikola

monument to the master in his hometown

Nikola Fichev (1800, Dryanovo - 1881, Veliko Tarnovo ), often called Kolyu Ficheto - a Bulgarian architect, an outstanding representative of the Bulgarian Revival of the XIX century , builder and sculptor [1] .

At the age of three, Nicola became an orphan, having lost his father. He began his studies at the age of 10 in Tryavna . When he was 17 years old, he studied stone-craft from the masters of the Western Bulgarian construction school in the city of Goritsa ( Korca , in modern Albania ). After that he worked on the construction of churches, bell towers and bridges in Bratsigovo . Nicola became an apprentice at the age of 23 and was a full member of the building guild in 36 years.

In addition to his native Bulgarian language , he spoke fluent Turkish and was sufficiently fluent in Greek and Romanian , but was illiterate and could not read and write.

According to legend, Kolyu Ficheto undertook to build a bridge over Yantru , promising the Turkish pasha , who had commissioned the construction, that if he didn’t meet the amount of money allocated to him (the former was three times less than those requested by other contractors), he would be free to execute him. These proud words of the master are carved on the monument to Kolyu Ficheto installed in Veliko Tarnovo . Once Kolyu Ficheto laid down under one of the bridges he had built during the test in order to show his confidence in his reliability.

The architect died in Veliko Tarnovo in 1881, where he was buried.

In 1980, ceremonies were held in Bulgaria in honor of the 100th anniversary of the architect N. I. Fichev [2] .
