Inhabitants of Narnia
Giants
Giants are humanoid creatures of enormous size, not very smart. Most giants live in the northern state of Etinsmoor and in Harfang Castle. As a rule, they are hostile to people (although they are kind and friendly). Judging by the cookbook described in the Chronicle “ Silver Chair ”, almost all the creatures that inhabit Narnia eat, and people are a delicacy for them. But not all giants are stupid: some ancient giants built a bridge over the abyss and a city in Etinsmoor, the ruins of which are sought after by Aslan’s commandment in the book “ Silver Chair ”. Several times the chronicles mention the wars that the Narnian kings (“ The Horse and His Boy ” and others) forced to wage with giants. Good giants, on the contrary, defend Narnia in battles with various enemies.
The giants mentioned in the Chronicles of Narnia : Rambulbuffin, Mnogopud.
Dwarfs
Aslan called them “Sons of the Earth”, as opposed to people - “Sons of Adam ” and “Daughters of Eve ”. Among the Dwarves, there are at least two races: the Black Dwarfs and the Red Dwarfs; the difference between them is hair color. Red gnomes support Aslan, Blacks are more proud and warlike. All the gnomes mentioned are male, although it is known that a human woman can conceive of them.
Where the dwarves came from is unknown. However, when Aslan convened the first council, when the world “was not even five hours old,” he asked the Dwarf Master to introduce himself [1] .
The Dwarves mentioned in the Chronicles of Narnia : Tram (Tykvik), Nikabrik , Poggin, Grifl, Diggl. A descendant of the gnomes from mixed marriages with humans is Dr. Cornelius and the nanny Caspiana
Zemlyuki (Gnomes)
Zemlyuki (in another translation - dungeons) - inhabitants of the underground country of Podland (in another translation - the Underdark). Their appearance varies significantly: they can be of different height, have a different shape of the face and noses, a different number of fingers on the arms and legs. Also, they may or may not have a beard, tail, horn, etc. As follows from the last chapters of the Silver Chair book, they were the indigenous people of the deepest and most mysterious underground country of Bism, but were called from it by the witch of the Green Witch and they served her against her will, preparing to become an invading army to conquer Narnia. Thanks to Prince Rilian, witchcraft was destroyed, and the happy dungeons returned to Bisma through a crevice in the earth's crust. [2]
Talking animals
In Narnia, you can also meet many animals of our world. In addition, there are many talking species of these animals. When Aslan breathed on the first pair of animals, some of them not only gained intelligence and speech, but also changed in size. Small animals (rodents, birds, and small mammals) are larger than their non-speaking relatives, and larger animals are slightly smaller. Talking Beasts fall into four main categories: birds, ungulates, mammals and reptiles. Their life expectancy is the same as that of a person. There are no talking fish or insects. In the book “ Prince Caspian ” it turns out that not all animals were speechless from the beginning of the world: for example, some Narnian mice became talking after they had bitten the ties of Aslan, who was killed on the Stone Table.
Unicorns
Unicorns are white horses with a horn on their heads. Narnian unicorns are described as very graceful, delicate, polite and soft in communication animals. However, in times of danger, they can be ferocious and terrible beasts. In battle, they use their horn, hooves and teeth. The unicorn Diamond is the most symbolic character of the book " The Last Battle " (see) [3] .
Waggly Wandering
The wandering frogs are tall, thin creatures that resemble both a human and a frog. In the roaming quaker between the fingers and toes of the membrane, the hair is gray-green, the body is no larger than the gnome, and the arms and legs are very long. They live in swamps in wigwams quite apart from each other. They feed on what is in the swamps - eels, etc. Kvakli smoke pipes with some grass, the smoke of which does not rise up, but spreads along the ground like fog.
The crooks roaming in the Chronicles of Narnia : Gloom
Centaurs
Centaurs are creatures with the head and torso of a person on the body of a horse. In this regard, centaurs have two stomachs, a human and a horse’s (according to the faun in the book “Silver Chair”). They are the bearers of wisdom, devote a lot of time to observing the stars, in their course they are able to understand the future. They also know the properties of herbs and the nine names of Aslan. They live in caves.
Centaurs mentioned by name in the Chronicles of Narnia : Cloud, Thunderbolt, Runomud.
People
The sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve are not the people who originally inhabited Narnia. Narnia, as conceived by Aslan, is a country of talking animals, trees and other fabulous creatures. The first people come to Narnia from our world ("The Sorcerer's Nephew ") at the time of its creation. With their appearance, Aslan places the right and duty to reign in the world he created. In the narrative of the events of the war with Jadis, the only people are Pavensi’s children, in “Kon and his boy” you can find out that there are few people in Narnia, but they are there are described the nobles of the Narnian embassy, the Narnian knights who participated in the battle of Anward (the Orlandians are represented mostly people, several human island principalities are described and the large state of Tarkhistan , which is surrounded by human countries, and robbers scoured already in Telmar , which was considered by the Hermit in the pond). About the small number of Narnians before the invasion of the Telmarines, Dr. Cornelius reports. Some representatives of the human race enter Narnia by chance (Telmarians), but they, by the will of Aslan, find their rightful place in its history.
Star People
Star people are tall, unusually beautiful and noble people who radiate radiance. As celestial bodies, they participate in the "great dance." They reflect the ancient Christian idea of the angels who are personally responsible for the movement of the heavenly bodies in the sky. Apparently, like the angels, some of them are immortal - so, Ramandu , who has exhausted his vitality, is “retired” and eats sunny berries to heal from old age. Stars in human (angelic) appearance appear in the book “ The Last Battle ” and become eyewitnesses of Aslan’s trial of the whole world of Narnia created by him.
The star people mentioned in the Chronicles of Narnia : Ramanda , Koriakin
Sea people
Sea people settle on the seamounts, do not wear clothes. They use fish for hunting. A sea girl herding a herd of fish resembling cows is also mentioned. Their world is described in the book “Sailing on the Vanquisher of the Dawn”, he is admired from the board of the ship Lucy Pavensi. In Narnia, they live an independent life and are usually hostile to humans, but, as the children of Pevensi recall, in the distant past they willingly communicated with terrestrial creatures and for this went out of the sea.
Maenads
Companions of Vakhka (see. Maenads ). Appear in the book " Prince Caspian ", but do not take much part in the events.
Nymphs
Nymphs are the spirits of rivers (naiads) and trees (dryads). Dryads are like women, and at the same time like a tree. They are much higher than a person, if they stand next to the centaur, their head will be on the same level. Dryads are associated with their tree: if cut down, the dryad dies. Nymphs are very friendly with the fauns, and together they arrange midnight dances. Nymphs play lira.
In addition to nymphs, river and forest spirits also inhabit Narnia.
Okhotrops
Okhotlopes ( English Monopod ( creature) ), or odnostupy - people who were formerly gnomes, but the wizard-star Koriakin turned them into monotopes - creatures with one big foot. They move in huge leaps. They sleep, raising their feet to the top, which protects from rain and sun. The foot is so huge that it allows them to swim without boats. They live on the island of Okhotsk, ruled by a former star Koriakin , appointed by Aslan. Somewhat irrational in their behavior, and constantly repeat the words of the Main Okhotsk, as they consider him very smart.
Fauns
Fauns - creatures with a human body and legs of a goat, on the head of the fauns small horns. Fauns love to dance with nymphs. In ancient Roman mythology, the god of forests, fields and pastures, animals. Faun was considered a sly spirit, stole children.
The fauns mentioned in the Chronicles of Narnia are : Mr. Tumnus .
Satyrs
Satyrs - in Greek mythology, these are forest deities, fertility demons, Bacchus companions, cheerful goat-footed creatures similar to the fauns. In The Chronicles of Narnia, satyrs are mentioned in the book Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - two of them, together with a family of squirrels and an old fox, celebrate Christmas at the table that Father Christmas laid in the forest, for which they were later turned to stone by the White Witch. The mythological satyr is lazy and licentious. Perhaps that is why the author made one of them a negative character: in the book “ The Last Battle ” appears the satyr Vraggl, who went over to the side of the enemies of King Tyrian.
