History
Var is one of the first 83 departments formed during the French Revolution in March 1790 . Created on the territory of the former province of Provence . The name comes from the Var river. In 1860 , part of the territory of Var was cut off and transferred to the newly formed department of the Alpes-Maritimes , as a result of the Var river, which gave the name of the department, was outside its territory.
Thanks to climatic conditions, several centuries ago, he became the birthplace of the industrial production of essential oils.
Geographical position
The Var department is located in southeastern France on the Mediterranean coast ( Cote d'Azur ), with an area of 5,973 km². The Côte d'Azur owes its popularity among holidaymakers to a pleasant climate - the mild and warm winters are replaced by non-hot summers . According to one version, the name was invented by the shocked look of the “marvelous beauty” of the Hyeres Bay French writer and poet [2] - in 1870 he published a novel called The Cote d'Azur.
Administrative division
The department includes 3 districts ( Brignoles , Draguignan and Toulon ), 43 cantons and 153 communes. In March 2015, there was a reassignment of some communes and a reduction in the number of cantons of the Var department from 43 to 23 [3] .
