It is composed mainly of limestones , which are cut by the rivers Zhvava-Kvara , Yupshara and others. Their channels form deep canyon-like valleys; karst phenomena are developed, including numerous caves . The lower slopes of the ridge are covered with deciduous and coniferous forests, above are subalpine and alpine meadows. Along the valleys of the Bzyb, Yupshara and Gega rivers, along the ridge, there is a road to Lake Ritsa .

Caves

Many caves are discovered and explored by cavers on the Gagra Range, in the Arabica and Achibah massifs, three of them are among the deepest on Earth:

  1. Verevkina Cave (depth 2204 m) [3] .
  2. The Krubera-Voronya-Arabik cave system (total depth 2199 m) [4] .
  3. Sarma Cave (depth 1830 m) [5] .

The decisive share of the hard work performed in the search and first investigation of the cave system named after V.V. Ilyukhin and other natural objects on the Gagra ridge, belongs to Russian and Ukrainian professional researchers and amateurs [6] .

Lists of caves, maps and other detailed information can be found on the website of the Speleology and Karst Studies Commission [7] of the Russian Geographical Society (the information-search system “Caves”, section Search for Caves) [8] , as well as on the sites of various speleoclubs.
