Geography
The Somme Department is located in the historical region of Picardy and borders the French departments of Pas de Calais , Nord , Oise and Haines and Seine-Maritime . From the west it is washed by the waters of the Pas de Calais . The Somma River flows through the entire department, giving it its name. The area is 6170 km².
The main cities of the department are Amiens , Abbeville , Albert , Peronn , Mondidier , Corby , Dullan , Roy .
History
The Somme is one of the first 83 departments formed during the French Revolution in March 1790 . It arose in the territory of the former province of Picardy .
During the First World War , large battles took place here ( 1916 and 1918 - the Battle of the Somme ).
