Geography

The Somme Department is located in the historical region of Picardy and borders the French departments of Pas de Calais , Nord , Oise and Haines and Seine-Maritime . From the west it is washed by the waters of the Pas de Calais . The Somma River flows through the entire department, giving it its name. The area is 6170 km².

The main cities of the department are Amiens , Abbeville , Albert , Peronn , Mondidier , Corby , Dullan , Roy .

History

The Somme is one of the first 83 departments formed during the French Revolution in March 1790 . It arose in the territory of the former province of Picardy .

During the First World War , large battles took place here ( 1916 and 1918 - the Battle of the Somme ).

2nd round: Emmanuel Macron - 54.22% (in the whole country - 66.10%); Marine Le Pen - 45.78% (in the whole country - 33.90%);

(2012 - 1st round: Francois Hollande ( Socialist Party ) - 28.37%; Nicolas Sarkozy ( Union for the Popular Movement ) - 23.90%; Marine Le Pen ( National Front ) - 23.77%; Jean- Luke Melanshon ( Left Front ) - 11.00%; Francois Bayreux ( Democratic Movement ) - 7.31%. Other candidates - less than 5%. 2nd round: Francois Hollande - 54.41% (nationwide - 51 , 62%); Nicolas Sarkozy - 45.59% (in the whole country - 48.38%)).

(2007 - 1st round: Nicolas Sarkozy ( Union for the Popular Movement ) - 27.73%; Segolen Royal ( Socialist Party ) - 24.89%; Jean-Marie Le Pen ( National Front ) - 14.36%; Francois Bayrou ( Union for French Democracy ) - 14.29%. 2nd round: Nicolas Sarkozy - 50.46% (nationwide - 53.06%); Segolen Royal - 49.54% (countrywide - 46.94%)).

As a result of the elections to the National Assembly in 2017, 5 mandates from the Somme department were distributed as follows: “ Forward, Republic! ” - 2, “ Union of Democrats and Independents ” - 1, “ Republicans ” - 1, “Unconquered France” - 1. (2007 - 5 mandates: SP - 2, SND - 1, SC - 1, З - 1; 2007 - 6 mandates: SC - 2, SND - 2, SP - 1, Different leftists - 1).

In the elections to the Council of the Hautes-de-France region in 2015 in the 1st round, the National Front led by Marine Le Pen received 41.02%, the right bloc led by Xavier Bertrand - 26.33%, the left bloc Pierre de Sentignon - 17.27%. After the left refused to participate in the 2nd round, the right bloc received 56.37%, the National Front - 43.63%.
