Biography

Born in the family of the doctor Wojciech Langevich (04.20.1793 - 08.13.1831) and Eleanor Langevich (1797-1861) in Krotoszyn. He was the youngest of three children. Older brothers Alexander Langevich (1824 - 1879) and Jozef Langevich (1826 - 1882). Studied in Poznan , Breslau and Prague .

For some time he served in the Prussian landver , then in the Prussian guards artillery. He retired in the officer rank and went to Paris .

He taught at a military school created by Ludwik Meroslavsky , but quit because of personal hostility and disagreement with the latter.

In 1860-1861 he participated in the Garibaldi expedition against Naples .

He remained in Italy and taught at the Polish Military School in Cuneo , founded to train officers for the future Polish uprising from young Poles.

Participation in the 1863 Uprising

During the Polish uprising of 1863, Langevich, on January 9, was appointed commander of the Sandomierz Voivodeship with the rank of colonel , took command of the rebel groups assembled in southern Poland . January 23, 1863 submitted to the rank of general .

Hiding in the woods near Vonhotsk , Langevich gathered and organized a detachment of more than 3,000 people with 5 guns.

Actual leader of the uprising since February 24, 1863 after the flight of Ludwik Meroslavsky . However, it was officially proclaimed the dictator of the uprising only on March 11, 1863, after a few days before that Meroslavsky, already in Paris, sent a letter in which he reluctantly (possibly due to long-standing disagreements with Langevich) recommended him to be appointed his successor. After a series of battles with Russian troops, he was finally defeated at Hrobrzha and Grohovisko . March 19, 1863, relieving himself of all authority, fled to Austrian Galicia .

After the rebellion

He was arrested by the Austrians the next day - March 20, 1863. He was sentenced to two years in prison at the Josefstadt fortress.

In 1865 he was released and settled in Solothurn . In 1881, the only son of Langevich was born - Tadeusz Langevich (05/27/1881 - 06/13/1915).

In 1867 he left for Turkey , where he served in the Turkish army under the name Langi Bey, tried to organize the Polish Legion under the Turkish army. He died in poverty and obscurity in Istanbul in 1887.

He was buried in the cemetery of Heydar Pasha next to his English wife Suzanne (02.02.1837 - 11.24.1906).
