Player Career
Pellegrino was the most important part of the Argentinean Veles Sarsfield club when the team was able to achieve the greatest successes in its history by winning the Clausura Championship three times, once the Aperture Championship and taking five international trophies, including the Libertadores Cup and Super Cup .
In 1999, Mauricio moved to Valencia , with whom he won two Spanish titles, took the UEFA Cup in 2004 and played for two years in a row in the Champions League final . This tournament did not submit to him - in the final of 2001, it was he who did not score the decisive penalty in the penalty shootout , and the title went to Bayern Munich .
In 2005, the 33-year-old Pellegrino left Valencia, not finding a common language with the club's new coach, Claudio Ranieri, and moved to Liverpool , which was coached by his former mentor Rafael Benitez , signing a six-month contract. However, the age defender could not gain a foothold in the new team and went to end his career in the Spanish Alaves .
Coach Career
After completing his career as a player, Mauricio entered the coaching staff of Valencia , where he became the coach of the youth team. In June 2008, Rafael Benitez, in an interview with the official website of Liverpool , said that Pellegrino was returning to Merseyside to take the post of coach of the club’s first team [2] . May 7, 2012 signed a contract with Valencia for a period of two years. For the Argentinean, work in the Levantine club will be the first independent experience - previously he worked exclusively as an assistant [3] . On December 1 of the same 2012 due to the unsuccessful course of the season and a devastating 2-5 defeat from the Real Sociedad club, he was dismissed from the post of Valencia coach.
In April 2013, he accepted Estudiantes , but two years later he was dismissed due to unsatisfactory team results. In the summer of 2015 he was appointed coach of Independiente , having won in the first six matches, he became the team's most successful coach in recent years, but in the end he was also fired due to poor results. In 2016, he headed the Alaves [4] .
On June 23, 2017, he was officially appointed coach of the English Southampton , having signed a three-year contract with the club [5] . Already on March 12, 2018, he was dismissed from his post for poor results. [6] Under him, the team won only one of the last 17 matches and is balancing one point from the relegation zone from the Premier League.
On June 2, 2018 he was appointed the new coach of the Spanish club Leganes .
