History
The theater was built by architect Gabriel Daviu in the middle of the XIX century on the site of a demolished prison, which bore the same name. Until 1870 it was called the Imperial Theater Circus, and on its stage there were performances no longer circus, but not theatrical in the full sense of the word.
On August 19, 1862, the theater gave its first performance - the play "Rothomago" in the presence of Empress Eugenia . Since the beginning of the 20th century, the theater began to provide its stage for productions of operettas and ballets. In 1905, Georges Méliès staged his experimental play, Journey to the Moon . Here, in May 1909, the first performances of the “Russian Seasons” by Sergey Diaghilev took place . In 1912, the Parisians saw the premiere of the ballet " Afternoon Faun Rest " with Vaclav Nizhinsky in the title role. In 1917, the scandalous premiere of the ballet Parade took place. From 1929 to 1979, the Chatelet Theater was mainly opera. After the management of the theater in 1979 was transferred to the Paris city administration, it began (since 1980) to function as a broad-based musical theater (concerts of orchestra and chamber music, operettas, operas, ballets).
Architecture
The concert hall of the theater seats about 2500 spectators. The stage area is 24 by 35 meters, which in 1886 allowed 676 artists to fit on it simultaneously in the spectacle extravaganza Cinderella. It has good acoustics thanks to the glass dome.
