History
The club was founded in 1923 by the workers of the Grivitz railway workshops, in the neighborhood of which a stadium was built 16 years later in the Bucharest area under the name Julesht. In the interwar period, Rapid was one of the most successful teams in the country, having won six consecutive victories in the Romanian Cup . In 1967, under the leadership of Valentin Stanescu, in whose honor the club stadium is now named, the team obtained its first league title in the post-war period. The next two decades were characterized by the recession of the team, which spent six years in the second division, and, returning, balanced on the verge of relegation. In 1993, the club was acquired by businessman and politician George Kopos, after which the team again became one of the strongest in the country. Mircea Lucescu and Mircea Rednik played a big role in the club’s success, under whose leadership Rapid won the championship in 1999 and 2003. In the 2005/06 season the team led by Rezvan Lucescu spent his best season in European competition: knocking out such clubs as Feyenoord , Hamburg and Hertha from the competition and taking first place in the group with such teams as Stuttgart , Shakhtar (Donetsk), PAOK and Rennes , Rapid reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup , where he lost to fellow countrymen from Steaua .
