Geography

The total area of ​​the district is 1631.50 square meters. km It borders with the Akhsuinsky , Geokchaysky , Udzharsky , Imishli , Sabirabad , Hajigabul , Zerdab regions.

Kurdamir region is located northwest of Baku , in Shirvan - the historical region of Azerbaijan . This is a beautiful, fertile area, very attractive for tourism and recreation - sometimes it is called Gulistan (flower garden). Summer is hot, the climate is steppe, with arid summers. The animal world is diverse - there are wild boars, wolves, foxes, jackals, pheasants, tauraches, wild ducks and geese. This region is famous for its vineyards, and the most famous grape variety is called "Shirvanshahly" (that is, shah). The Kurdamir region is famous for its carpet weaving traditions. The best-known type of local carpets on the world market is Shillan. These carpets are woven in the village of the same name, near Kurdamir .

Etymology

Kurdamir region, which is part of the Aran Economic Region, as a center was established in 1930 .

There is an assumption that the name Kurdamir comes from the words “Kur” and “Damir” (in the Shirvan dialect, the word “Kur” is used for the meaning of eloquent, courageous, valiant, and by the word “Damir” was meant the leader of seven settlements based in this region Damir). According to another version, it is assumed that the name Kurdamir is derived from the words “Kur Daimir”, that is, not suffering disasters during the floods of the Kura River. Subsequently, the letter "th" was assimilated, and the name of the territory was transformed into "Kurdamir."

General information

The area of ​​the district is 163,151 ha, which is 1.9% of the entire territory of the country. The district consists of 23 administrative units, 1 city, 2 villages and 61 municipalities.

Altitude is 200 meters, the average annual air temperature is 17.18 ° C, the average annual rainfall is 250-300 mm, the region has a dry subtropical climate.

According to the 1939 census, in the Kurdamir region of the Azerbaijan SSR, Azerbaijanis made up 87.5%, Russians - 6.2%, Lezghins - 5.0% [1] .

According to the 1999 census, in the Kurdamir region, the Lezghins accounted for - (0.1)% [2] .
