History
It is believed that after the relative commercial failure of the previous album The Gospel According to The Meninblack , EMI persuaded the group to make a more digestible product. The Stranglers, calling the album “La Folie” (“Madness”), claimed to mean “love as a form of madness” and consider the album as conceptual: each track “explores a particular aspect of love”.
Golden Brown , released as a single, ensured the group the commercial success that EMI had been waiting for, on January 9, 1982, rising to 2nd place in the UK Singles Chart [2] and becoming the group's main bestseller in its entire history. Later, suspicions appeared that this was a disguised "ode" to heroin ; The BBC realized it too late, not having time to ban a song on the radio (and the musicians denied the fact that the lyrics of the song are related to drugs).
“Let Me Introduce You To The Family” (# 42, 1981) and “La Folie” (# 47, 1982) were also released as singles from the album. The last of them also caused controversy: it is about cannibalism and is based on the real story of Issei Sagawa , a Japanese student who “out of love” killed and ate fellow student Rene Hartewelt. Originally, the third single was planned for “Tramp”; on the issue of “La Folie” insisted by Jean-Jacques Bernel .
In the book “The Stranglers - Song by Song”, Hugh Cornwell told that the record company had reduced the original title of the first track “Non Stop Nun” (in the satirical key of a nun telling about God's love), but none of the participants noticed in time .
