Contemporary hit radio

Contemporary hit radio (from the English - “modern hits radio”, abbreviated CHR ), also current hits (from English - “current hits”) or Top 40 , is a broadcasting format common in the world , the basis of the musical content of which is the most Popular current chart hits . The format distinguishes several categories depending on what style of music prevails on radio stations : rock , pop or urban .

The term Contemporary Hit Radio was coined in the early 1980s by Radio & Records in order to define radio stations broadcasting music of various styles from the top lines of the charts.

Variations

  • CHR / dance - loses dance remixes of popular songs, including hits from dance charts. In its pure form, this format is rarely found on the air, but they have a regular audience.
  • CHR / club - plays rhythmic club music, including mixes and remixes . At the same time, on radio stations with this format - filling with any broadcasts not related to this format does not exceed 5% of all airtime or is absent altogether. Such radio stations are popular among young people .
  • CHR / urban (also known as mainstream urban ) or CHR / rhythmic (also known as rhythmic contemporary ) - focuses on playing hip-hop and R&B . There are some differences between CHR / rhythmic and urban contemporary format: urban radio stations broadcast R&B and soul more often, and CHR / rhythmic broadcast R&B pop and dance music.
  • Adult CHR is a merger of the CHR / pop and hot adult contemporary (Hot AC) formats. Many stations in the Adult CHR format regularly play rhythmic and dance music, unlike Hot AC stations.
  • CHR / pop - plays hits of pop , urban , alternative rock , rock and sometimes country styles.
  • CHR / rock - a format similar to CHR / pop, but also including hits of modern rock .
  • CHR / '80s is probably the oldest format formed in the 1980s.
