Jigit

Jigit (translated from Turkic languages - “young guy ”, “ young man ”, also “ well done ” [1] [2] ) - historically in Central Asia and the Caucasus : a rider who is distinguished by bravery , endurance , stamina, art to drive a horse and wield a weapon .

Babur-name ( XVI century ) mentions “yigits” in the meaning of fighters [3] . The word “horseman” is also mentioned in A. Pushkin ’s poem “Istanbul gyaury is glorified today” ( 1830 ) [4]

On the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, the Abaza tribe bore the name " Dzhigety " (horsemen).

In the Central Asian possessions of the Russian Empire , the Kirghiz (including the Kazakhs) and other nomads [5] were the so-called ones, who were Russian guides, messengers, and scouts . In addition, the horseman is a rank conferred on the lower ranks of some Caucasian and Turkmen troops .

The concept of " horseman " is relevant today. It has the meaning similar to the concept of “ good fellow ”, and is not directly related to riding a horse. In this sense, it is used in the Soviet film Kuban Cossacks (1949)
