History
The stadium was officially opened in 1977 under the name "Weststadion". In 1980, the arena was renamed in honor of its architect, the legendary football player Gerhard Hanappi . Among fans, the stadium is often called the “Holy Hanappi”, in accordance with the slogan of fans Rapid ist uns're Religion (“Rapid is our religion”).
The stadium is the second largest in Vienna after the Ernst Happel Stadium.
