Club career
Melchiot began on the Ajax youth team, then spent three seasons on the first team, winning the championship in 1998 and the Netherlands Cup in 1998 and 1999 . In the summer of 1999, he moved to Chelsea . With “retirees,” Melchiot won the FA Cup in 2000 .
In July 2004, he signed a three-year contract with Birmingham City [1] . Mario made his debut for the “blue” in the match against Portsmouth , which ended with the score 1: 1 [2] . The following season, Birmingham flew out of the Premier League. Melchiot played his last match for Birmingham City, which took place on May 7, 2006, against the Bolton Wanderers , which the Blues lost 0-1.
In August 2006, Melchiot joined the French Rennes team, signing a one-year contract with her. Mario made his debut in the French team in a match against Monaco , which ended with the score 1-1. Since then, he has entrenched in the main composition of “Rennes”. He scored his first goal for the team in the 1/16 French League Cup match against the Libourne-Saint-Séorin team from the second French division. Melchiot earned the trust of the team when he scored his first goal in the French championship in derby against Nantes . In the summer of 2007, Mario’s contract with Rennes ended.
On June 15, 2007, Melchiot joined the English Wigan Athletic as a free agent. July 24, he received the rank of team captain in connection with the departure of the club Arjen de Zeuva .
Netherlands national team
Melchiot spent 22 matches for the Netherlands national team [3] , and made his national debut on October 11, 2000 in the qualifying match for the World Cup , in which the Netherlands lost 0: 2 to Portugal . He was included in the application of the Netherlands for the European Championship 2008 , where he spent 1 match against Romania .

In 1998, Melchiot and his Ajax teammates Benny McCarthy and Dean Hur , calling themselves BMD, released the song “Midas Touch” .
