The Igumnovsky solid waste landfill is the largest in Europe operating landfill for the storage of solid waste [1] , located 15 km from Nizhny Novgorod , near Igumnovo in the city of Dzerzhinsk . Operated since 1983. About 4 million m³ of garbage is added to the dump annually. The area of the landfill is 111.5 ha.

Environmental Issues
The first fire at the site occurred in the late 1980s. [2] In the 2000s, the burning became continuous and has been going on for more than 5 years, while the smoke spreads around, affecting nearby settlements ( Stroiteley , Gorbatovka , Lesnaya Polyana and Gnilitsky Dvoriki ). With a fair wind smoke reached and Nizhny Novgorod [3] . Also, for several years, as a result of violation of the technology for the burial of waste, systematic emissions of pollutants into nearby water bodies and groundwater were made . [four]
Quenching is difficult due to the formation of landfill gas , for 2008 its accumulated volumes were estimated at 3 million m³. [five]
In 2010, the mayor of the city of Dzerzhinsk expressed concern that if the level of the Cheboksary reservoir was raised, the groundwater would rise and the Igumnovsky landfill would be flooded. [one]
Reclamation
As of the beginning of 2019, in accordance with the design decisions, the body of the landfill was formed and daily work was carried out on filling the landfill with sand. [6]
