Until the 1990s, the army was one of the forces on which the government relied, as well as one of the sources of employment for African youths. In 1992, Guyana's army consisted of 97% of Africans and 3% of American Indians. Acquisition for hire (men 18-45 years old, term of the first contract - 3 years).
The total strength of the armed forces is approx. 12 thousand people. They consist of the Guyana Defense Forces (subdivided into land forces, coast guard and air force corps), the People’s Militia and the National Security Service (police). Military spending in 2003 was 0.8% of GDP.

Ground Forces
In the ground forces - two 1st and 2nd (reserve) battalion groups (in the 2nd reserve - in peacetime only the battalion headquarters and one company were staffed), a special-purpose company, an engineer battalion, and a supply battalion. It is armed with a BRM (up to 5 Brazilian EE-11s, 4 English Shorland), 12 Soviet towed D-30 guns (122 mm), 48 mortars (12 English L16A1 (81 mm), 18 Soviet M-43 (82 mm ), 18 M-43 (120 mm)), 6 Chinese MLRS Toure 63 (107 mm), 18 Soviet MANPADS "Strela-2".
Coast Guard
Armed with the Essexubo patrol ship (a former English River minesweeper), 8 small patrol boats and a Kimble landing ship (Dutch-built).
Air Corps
Guyana's Air Corps is designed to provide tactical surveillance, mobility, evacuation of casualties and support for ground forces. They include 2 transport aircraft (1 English Skywen (1 more for storage), 1 Chinese Y-12-II; 1 Cessna-441 for storage) and American helicopters (2 Bell-206, 1 Bell -412 ", 1 R-162F, 1 French SA319 in storage).
