Time for print

Time for Prints (from the English - “time for prints”) is a term used in many online communities devoted to photography and indicating the agreement between the model and the photographer. Very often abbreviated as TFP . Instead of paying each other for services, the photographer agrees to provide the model with a certain number of prints of the best photos from the session and a limited license to use these images in exchange for signing the model release .

It is important to note that the conditions of such a model release may differ significantly, and therefore the photographer and models who agree on the shooting should discuss in advance where and how to use the pictures. TFP shooting does not, by default, assume that the model provides the right to use its image for commercial purposes.

A variant of this agreement is Time for CD ( TFCD ). That is, the selection of images is provided on the CD instead of prints. Currently, in online communities, the term TFP usually refers to TFCD .

Shooting on TFP conditions is beneficial for both the model and the photographer at certain stages of their work and is usually useful for both parties when their professionalism coincides. Thus, it is unlikely that a professional model will be interested in shooting TFP with a novice photographer, just as a professional photographer will not be particularly interested in shooting a novice model. However, at a close professional level, shooting TFP is likely to give good results, and it is also a convenient way to implement your own creative projects with minimal financial costs.

A lot of controversy raises the question of paying for studio rent and paying for work (or expensive consumables) by a makeup artist. There is no unanimous opinion on this subject, however, a common approach can be formulated: "Whoever is more interested, he pays." If a model with little experience agrees to act with an experienced photographer, it is logical that the payment falls on the shoulders of the model. If a novice photographer wants to learn how to work with a more experienced model, then the photographer pays. If the level of the photographer and the model is the same, as well as the level of interest in shooting is the same, it is logical to divide the payment of associated costs equally.

Terms

There are no “standard” conditions for TFP / TFCD shooting. Each photographer and model may have their own preferences regarding how to organize and carry out the shooting. However, the following agreements are generally accepted:

  • The model is responsible for wardrobe and makeup.
  • The photographer is responsible for the location or studio and equipment rental (refers to the choice of studio and equipment).
  • Payment of associated costs is carried out by mutual agreement (jointly, only by model, only by photographer).
  • The photographer is responsible for printing pictures, burning a CD and shipping costs.
  • Each participant is responsible for their own movement.
  • The photographer receives a signed model release for the use of photographs for portfolio, printing or commercial purposes.
  • The model gets permission to use photos for her portfolio.
  • The photographer selects the best photos, retouch them, and sends models.
  • The amount of retouching also depends on the photographer.
  • The total time for selecting, retouching and transmitting photos of the model can vary from one week to two months.
  • Topics and wardrobe requirements are discussed prior to filming by phone , in person or via email.
  • Some photographers provide only low-resolution images (for posting on the Internet), others provide high-quality images for printing.
  • The photographer may require that all photos posted on the network contain a watermark (to prevent image theft) and a link to the author .
  • The model cannot sell photos to any website or send them to magazines / Internet contests and so on without permission.
  • If the model is under 18 years old, parents are usually required to attend the photo session and sign the children's release .
  • A photographer can set rules on whether a model can bring a guest to attend a photo session.

Variations

Some professional photographers and models use the principle of TFP / TFCD photo sessions for personal projects, however, these terms are mainly found among Internet participants and photographic communities. Commercial and modeling agencies, photographers and models instead participate in test photo sessions (also called “casting models” or simply “casting”). Castings have several important differences from TFP / TFCD :

  • As a rule, they are organized through modeling agencies.
  • The model does not sign the model release, but both the photographer and the model can use photos for their portfolios.
  • To shoot the model’s portfolio, the model, as a rule, compensates the photographer, make-up artist and stylist for the time spent at a special rate.
  • In some cases, a modeling agency may pay for a photo session at the expense of the model’s future earnings.
  • To shoot the idea conceived by the photographer, the agency can provide the model at no cost in exchange for some shots for the model's portfolio and / or feedback on the model and its abilities.
  • Photos are taken mainly in a commercial style or as for editorial printing - in the same genre that participants use for clients.
  • Test photo sessions are not used for glamorous, art nudes, casual portraits, erotic photography, as they do not bring any benefit to the commercial or creative portfolio of the model.

Legal Aspects

Signing the release of the model is also not a mandatory requirement for TFP shooting, but it is highly desirable , since it allows you to protect both the photographer and the model from litigation.
