History
The name of the genus, apparently, dates back to the Gascon name of the ancestral castle of Labry ( fr. Château de Labrit ) in the Lands of south of Bordeaux , built in 1225-1230.
According to sources, the origin of the house of Albre is not known. Based on onomastic data, J. de Jurgen deduced the genus Albre from the genus Viscounts de Bezom ( French Bezaume ) [1] , but this version has not been confirmed by any sources. According to this reconstruction, Amagnier I (d. After 1030), the ancestor of the seniors Albre, and Amovin (Emon) (d. 1026), the ancestor of the Viscounts de Bezom, were brothers (Jurgen identifies them with the duobus mentioned in the act of April 3, 1009). consanguineus nostris Aymone ... et Aymonio ”) and the younger sons of Amagnier Sancho , named by Jurgen the fifth son of the Duke of Gascony, Sancho IV Garcia . In 1030, Amagnier I signed the act of the Duke of Gascony Sancho VI Guillaume .
The genealogy of the first generations of the genus is reconstructed only on the basis of secondary sources and onomastic data. Only starting with Amagnier VI (d. 1240) can one reliably trace the genealogy of the genus. In the XIII - XIV centuries, Albre significantly expanded their possessions, and also became related with many Gascon and Aquitan noble families, including the counts Armagnac , Angouleme , March , and later with the Bourbons. Already by the middle of the XIII century, the lord of Albre expanded to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the shores of the Garonne . Also, Albert acquired the Viscountry of Tarte , Maramn , Dax and the lord of Nerac .
During the Hundred Years War, Albre was at first a supporter of the kings of England . Arno Amagnier IX (d. 1401) was one of the most powerful feudal lords of Hyeni. He became close with King Charles V of France and married his relative, the daughter of Duke Pierre I de Bourbon , Margarita, thanks to which in 1382 he received the county of Dreux , which remained in the hands of representatives of the house until 1544 . The son of Arnaud Amagnier IX, Charles I d' Albray (d. 1415), in 1402 was appointed a constable of France . In addition, by the royal ordinance of 1375 he was declared the nephew of King Charles V with the right to wear royal lilies on the coat of arms. He died at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 . His son, Charles II d'Albre (d. 1471) was a member of the Royal Council and one of the commanders who distinguished themselves in the Hundred Years War. From his sons went several lines of the clan.
The eldest son of Charles II, Jean I d'Albre (d. 1468), inherited the clan seigneur and Viscountry of Tarte. His son, Alain the Great (1440-1522), through marriage, inherited the counties of Le Havre, Perigord and Castres .

In 1484, the son of Alain the Great, Jean (John) d'Albre , married the heiress of the King of Navarre , Catherine de Foix . Through this marriage, Jean inherited the kingdom of Navarre (under the name of Juan III), the counties of Foix and Bigorre , as well as the Viscountry of Bearn and Marsan . However, this marriage, which was a triumph of French politics, became the cause of the death of the independence of this Iberian kingdom, which had already existed for 700 years. The friendship of this small state with France caused enmity against him from Spain, and the King of Aragon Ferdinand II the Catholic took from Jean in 1512 all of Upper Navarre, which was annexed to Spain.
All attempts of Henry II d'Albray , son of Jean, to recover the lost (war of 1521 ) were unsuccessful. After the battle of Pavia, Henry was captured with the French king Francis I. From his marriage to Margarita Valois , from whom he inherited the county of Armagnac , was born Jeanne III d'Albre , later a zealous advocate of Calvinism . She was married to Antoine de Bourbon , who, subject to her influence, at one time sympathized with the Reformation and fought for the Huguenots , but subsequently openly sided with Catholicism and joined the Giza party.
He died in 1562 during the siege of Rouen . His wife, on the other hand, was the soul of the Reformation, and upon the death of her son-in-law, Louis I Conde , placed at the head of the Huguenots her son Henry III, who later became king of France, under the name of Henry IV . Arriving in Paris to attend the marriage of her son with Margarita de Valois , she died suddenly, perhaps from the poison she had given her, on June 4, 1572, more than two months before Bartholomew’s night .
All the possessions of Jeanne were inherited by her son, Henry of Navarre. After becoming king of France, in 1607 he added them to the royal domain.
