Ararat Valley ( armenian Արարատյան դաշտ ) is a plain on the territory of the Armenian Highlands , located in the Caucasus region south of Lake Sevan , in the foothills of Gegham Mountain. In the north of the plains - the border of Mount Aragats , in the south - Mount Ararat . The Araks River divides the plain into two parts: the northern (large), which belongs to Armenia and the southern (smaller) - Turkey . Altitude - 850-1000 meters. Length - 90 km. The climate is continental with moderately hot summers.
Irrigated agriculture is developed on the plain. Fields are irrigated by the waters of the Araks River and its left tributaries - Sevjur , Kasakh , Hrazdan , etc.
The number of drilled deep wells (up to 200–250 m) on the Ararat Plain in the 1980s, according to rough estimates, reached 3,000.
By the duration of the true sunshine, the Ararat plain can be compared with the subtropical zones of Central Asia. In the warm period, the duration of true sunshine in the republic is 82–87% of the annual [1] .
