History
In 1417 a monk from Veliky Ustyug, Rev. Varnava Vetluzhsky [3], founded a desert that later became a monastery, around which a trading village was formed.
In 1778, the village was transformed into the county town Varnavin of the Kostroma governorship [4] .
February 19 (March 3), 1853, the Russian writer Alexey Tikhonov was born here; author of the novel " Pollice verso " [5] [6] .
In 1918, an anti-Bolshevik uprising broke out in Uren , which developed into a full-scale civil war, on one side in which the rebels turned out, and on the other side the Varnavinsky Council [7] . As a result of the hostilities, the county town was badly damaged and lost its status .
In 1922, the Varnavinsky district was transferred from the Kostroma province to the Nizhny Novgorod province .
The status of the working village was assigned in 1961 .
