Biography
Born on June 14, 1951 in the village of Podorvikha, Irkutsk Region (flooded when the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station was commissioned in 1956) [9] in the family of a soldier who participated in the Great Patriotic War . Due to the fact that Sokurov's father often went to various duty stations, the family was forced to move with him. A. Sokurov began to study at a school in the Polish People’s Republic , and graduated in Turkmenistan . In 1968 he entered the history department of Gorky State University . During his studies, he worked in the editorial office of the Gorky Television art broadcasting, where at the age of 19 he released his first television programs: several television films, live television programs, including sports programs. In 1974, Sokurov defended his diploma as a historian and completed his studies at the university.
In 1975, he entered the directing department of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (workshop for directing the popular science film under the direction of A. M. Zguridi ). For excellent study received a personal scholarship of S. Eisenstein . During the training, Sokurov met Yuri Arabov , screenwriter, his main ally and ally in creativity. In 1979, having passed the exams as an external student, the director was forced to finish his studies one year ahead of schedule due to the growing conflict with the administration of the institute and the leaders of the Goskino : he was accused of formalism and anti-Soviet sentiment, which is why his student work was categorically rejected. As a result, the first artwork “The Lonely Voice of a Man ” based on the works of Andrei Platonov (later received several prestigious festival awards) was not counted by the institute’s leadership as a thesis. The picture was subject to destruction, but Sokurov and the Arabs broke into the archive, stole a positive copy and the source materials of the picture, putting other film materials in their place. . It was this time for Sokurov marked by the moral and professional support of the director Andrei Tarkovsky , who praised the first film of the young director [10] :
| Look at the picture called “The Lonely Voice of a Man” ... It’s not actors or even amateurs who play in this film, but just people from the street. At the same time, there is some strange style, a slice - some strange aspects, there are pieces that I just envy, without hiding, because I can never take it off ... I can say that in some in other scenes I could rise higher, but I never did such a thing ... There is a piece of black and white, shot with rapid speed and ... dumb. This is not even a single frame. There are four brilliant frames. ... you know that only for this picture ... Do you remember Vigo? .. He made two paintings, and he is already a genius, he has remained for centuries ... Level! Do you remember Zero for Behavior? Sokurov has strange things, inexplicable, even stupid, incomprehensible things like, incoherent ... But ... a genius! The hand of a genius .. |
.
Sokurov wanted to work at Mosfilm , but the working conditions there did not suit him. On the recommendation of A. Tarkovsky in 1980, Sokurov was enrolled in the film studio " Lenfilm ", where he shot his first game pictures. At the same time he collaborated with the Leningrad Documentary Film Studio, where at various times he released all his documentary works.
The first films shot by the director in Leningrad caused a negative reaction from both the Goskino and the party organs . Sokurov repeatedly stated that he was destined for a place in the camp near Syktyvkar . Over time, until the end of the 1980s, not one of his films was allowed to be rented. Tarkovsky twice organized Sokurov’s trip abroad, but the director, according to him, was kept by the Russian language and spiritual treasures of the Hermitage , with which he most of all did not want to leave [11] .
In the late 1980s, films made by Sokurov earlier were not only released, but also with great success represented Russian cinema at international film festivals. In 1980-1990, the director worked intensively, often shooting several films a year. At the same time, he took part in charity programs for young people on the radio, worked with a group of young aspiring directors at the Lenfilm film studio. In 1998-1999, he led a series of programs “Sokurov Island” on Petersburg television, in which the place of cinema in modern culture was discussed. Since the mid-1990s, Sokurov and his colleagues began to master the technology of video, which continues to this day. The Sokurov group made several documentary films, including those commissioned by Japanese television channels, thanks to the enthusiasm and participation of Japanese friends.
In 1995, by decision of the European Film Academy, the name of Alexander Sokurov was included in the list of one hundred of the best directors of world cinema. The director became a participant and laureate of many international festivals; retrospectives of his films are held almost annually in different countries of the world. He has repeatedly received awards at international film festivals, FIPRESCI prizes, Tarkovsky prizes, is a laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1997, 2014) and a laureate of the Vatican Prize - “Third Millennium Prize” (1998). Sokurov was 43 times nominated for prizes at prestigious film contests, of which he won 26 times [12] .
June 12, 2015
In 2010, Sokurov’s workshop was opened at the Department of Cinema and Television of KBSU ( Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after Kh. M. Berbekov ), in Nalchik [13] . In 2017, the debut film of the graduate of the course Sokurov Kantemir Balagov “ Tesnota ” was shown in the program “ Special Look ” at the Cannes Film Festival and received the FIPRESCI prize [14] .
The director lives in St. Petersburg , where, in addition to implementing creative endeavors, he leads a public group of activists, city defenders - the so-called “Sokurov Group”, which conducts a dialogue with the city government on the topic of protection against the destruction of old St. Petersburg.
On September 10, 2011, at the closing ceremony of the 68th Venice Film Festival, Alexander Sokurov received the Golden Lion and the Ecumenical Jury Prize for the painting Faust , which completes the cycle, which he called the tetralogy of power. At the presentation of the main prize, the chairman of the jury Darren Aronofsky noted that “the decision was unanimous: this is the film that changes the life of everyone who sees it” [15] .
In December 2011, the Japanese Consul General in St. Petersburg on behalf of the Japanese imperial family handed Sokurov the honorary Order of the Rising Sun with golden rays . At the ceremony, the director admitted a special attitude towards Japan and spoke in favor of the return by Russia of “ lands belonging to the Japanese people ” [16] .
In 2017, Sokurov was declared an honored guest at the 30th European Academy Awards , which will be held on December 9 in Berlin [17] .
Public position
In April 2000, he signed a letter in support of the policy of the recently elected President of Russia Vladimir Putin in Chechnya [18] [19] .
In March 2014, Sokurov issued a statement in which he indicated that the use of military force against the Ukrainians would have irreversible consequences for Russia itself. He also called on Russians to respect the desire of Ukrainians to live as a separate state:
We are not one people with Ukrainians, we are different. We have internally different cultures. No wonder Ukrainians always wanted to live as a separate state. Yes, we are close, we have a lot of similarities, but this does not mean that we are one people. It's not like that at all. We are different and we need to respect and appreciate this difference [20] .
In the 2016 parliamentary elections, he headed the St. Petersburg list of the Yabloko party (while remaining non-partisan).
In February 2017, Alexander Sokurov said that Russian political commentators, as well as Russian television and radio broadcasters, would sooner or later appear before the Hague Tribunal , as they “are provocateurs who are scattered with matches in a fire ” [21] .
I hope that someday these political observers will appear before the Hague Tribunal as provocateurs who inflicted enormous damage on the humanitarian space of Russia and the entire Russian people. These radio and television heralds are engaged in throwing matches during a fire. In the place of power, I would pay special attention to these people, creating the prerequisites for international conflicts. They must be punished. These are just criminals who work on both state and private channels. Both there and there is no responsibility for such behavior [22] .
On March 29, 2017, receiving the Nika Prize in the nomination For Honor and Dignity, he delivered a speech, part of which was dedicated to schoolchildren and students who took part in the protest rallies on March 26 . Sokurov spoke about the need for the authorities to engage in dialogue with young people and the inadmissibility of a “civil war” with them, and also advocated the release of Oleg Sentsov, convicted of terrorism, [23] [24] .
You can not start a civil war among schoolchildren and students.
December 3, 2018 became a member of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights [8] .
