History
It was formed in 1567 as a result of the hereditary division of the Hessian landgrafism after the death of its ruler - Philip I , between his sons. Hesse-Darmstadt went to the youngest of them - George I. After the death of his brother in 1583, the Landgrave of Hesse-Reinfels, Philip II, a significant part of his possessions also passed to George I.
His son Ludwig V also inherited part of the lands of his uncle, Landgrave of Hesse-Marburg Ludwig IV .
Ludwig VIII (1739-1768) ended a long dispute with Hesse-Kassel for the county of Ganau and acquired the possession of Lichtenberg.
Ludwig X (1790-1830) received the county of Westphalia, part of the Elector Mainz, the Elector Palatinate and the city of Worms according to the Luneville Peace of 1801. In 1806, after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, the landgrave joined the Rhine Union , and the landgrave itself was transformed into the Grand Duchy of Hesse .
