It was created during the construction of the Kabora-Bass dam hydroelectric power station on the Zambezi River . When the Cabora-Bassa Dam was built in 1973, the reservoir it created was filled in just one rainy season.

This reservoir is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. It reaches a maximum length and width of about 250 km and 38 km respectively, the flooding area is 2700 km² with an average depth of 20.9 m.
