Biography

Escobar was a defender , played for the Atletico Nacional medellin club, played for a while at the Young Boys number 2 in Switzerland ; had the nickname "El Caballero del Fútbol" ( Football Knight ). Winner of the Libertadores Cup (1988) and the Inter-American Cup (1989). In 1988, he scored a goal in a match with England at Wembley ; this goal brought the Colombians a draw. He participated in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

The consequences of Escobar's own goal in the match with the United States (trying to break American lumbago John Harks , he cut the ball into his own net) were serious: Colombia lost 1: 2 and was forced to leave the tournament after the group stage. Escobar returned to his homeland with the team, where - even before the end of the championship - he was overtaken by the bullet of the killer, Umberto Munoz Castro, who worked as a security guard . Munoz fired 6 bullets at Escobar, who was sitting in a car next to one of Medellin's bars. Each time, making a shot, the killer shouted "Goal!" The footballer was immediately brought to the hospital, where he died after 45 minutes. Andres Escobar had a state funeral, his name is still surrounded by great honor in Medellin, the international street football cup was named in his honor.

Umberto Munoz was sentenced to 43 years in prison . In 2001, the term was reduced to 26 years. But Munoz served only 11 years and was released in 2005 for good behavior . [2]

Andres's famous namesake, drug lord Pablo Escobar , also from Medellin, was also killed in this city six months before Andres's death.
