The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Odessa is an Orthodox church , one of the largest in Ukraine. From 1932 [1] until the closure in 1935/1936 and from the end of the 1940s to 2002, it was a cathedral church of the Odessa diocese . Located on Preobrazhenskaya street .

History
The current building was laid down on June 17, 1855 by the Archbishop of Kherson and Tauride Innocent (Borisov) ; It was completed by construction in 1869 and on April 13 of the same year, consecrated by the Archbishop of Kherson and Odessa Dimitri (Muretov) .
The two-story church was built at the expense of the merchants Jacob and Nikolai Cherepennikov, designed by architect L. Ts. Otton.
The Archbishop of Kherson and Odessa Nikon (Petin) († 16.04.1956) was buried in the lower temple of the cathedral, under whose leadership the post-war restoration of the temple was carried out.
On October 30, 2009, by the decision of the Odessa Regional Council, the cathedral building was transferred to the Odessa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. [2]
Device and architecture
The height of the temple along with the bell tower is 56 meters, with a capacity of 5000 people.
The temple consists of two sections: upper and lower, with three thrones in the upper and two in the lower.
The southern aisle of the upper church is consecrated in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin ; northern - in honor of the icon of the Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The lower church was consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas , its Southern aisle - in the name of three Saints : Basil the Great , St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom

Revered as the miraculous Kaspersky Icon of the Mother of God , brought for the first time to Odessa in 1854 from the village of Kasperovo.
Until 2007, the ashes of Archbishop Innocent (Borisov) rested here.
In the lower temple - the relics of the righteous archpriest Jonah of Ataman.
