Cape St. George

Six Japanese destroyers had to transfer replenishment for the garrison base on the island of Buka and remove aircraft from the island, since the airport on the island has practically lost its strategic importance. “ Onami ” and “Makinami” performed the role of cover in this formation of destroyers. The American command became aware of this convoy thanks to air reconnaissance and 5 destroyers were sent to intercept. The replenishment was safely delivered, and, taking on board the airfield personnel, the Japanese destroyers headed for Rabaul . At about 1:40, Onami and Makinami were discovered by Americans guarding the strait between the islands. Charles Osbourne , Claxton and Dyson launched a torpedo attack . “Makinami” suffered serious damage from a torpedo strike, but remained afloat and was sunk by artillery fire from “ Converse ” and “ Spence ”, while only 28 crew members were saved.
