He achieved his first major chess successes in 1970: 2nd place at the European Youth Championship ( Groningen ) and 1-2nd at the international tournament in Sarajevo . At the age of 21, he fulfilled the grandmaster norm at a major international competition in Vrnyachka Ban (1971; 2nd place). The best results in the championships of Yugoslavia: 1977 - 1-2nd, 1982 - 1st place.
In the national team of Yugoslavia, he participated in the 12th Olympiads ( 1972 - 1974 , 1978 - 1990 , 1994 , 1998 , 2002 ). At the 20th Olympiad in Skopje (1972) he showed the best result on his board, at the 25th in Lucerne ( 1982 ) - 3rd.
Participant of 4 interzonal tournaments; best result: Manila ( 1976 ) - 5-6th place. In 1979 he won the match against S. Gligorich - 5½: 4½.
Since the mid-1970s, he successfully performed in a number of major chess competitions: Teesside (1972) - 2nd; Las Palmas (1974, 1975) and Manila (1975) - 1st; Milan (1979) - 2–4 places (with A. Karpov and T. Petrosyan ). Member of the "stars" tournament in Montreal (1979) - 4th place.
The best results in other international competitions: Zurich (1970) - 1st; Cacak (1970) and Palma (Fr. Mallorca; 1971) - 1-2; Olot (1972) - 1st; Lanzarote and Hilversum (1973) - 3rd; Manila (1973) - 2nd; Ourense and Montreal (1974), Amsterdam (1975), Wijk aan Zee (1976) and Titovo-Uzice (1978) - 1st; Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo (1979) - 1-2; Mar del Plata (1981) - 2nd; Tilburg (1981) - 5th; London (1982) - 4-7th; Bugojno (1982 and 1986) - 2-3rd; Turin (1982) - 3-4th; Tilburg (1983, 1985 and 1986) - 2-3rd, 4th and 2nd; Reggio Emilia (1985/1986) - 1-3rd; Wijk aan Zee (1986) - 2-4th; Amsterdam (1986) - 1st; Brussels (1987) - 1-2; Bilbao (1987) - 3-4th; Belgrade (1987) - 1st place. The USSR match participant is a team of selected world chess players (1984, London, 4th board).
Member of the symbolic club of world champions winners Mikhail Chigorin since June 1982.
