Atlantic Loire ( Fr. Loire-Atlantique , bret. Liger-Atlantel ) is a department in the west of France , one of the departments of the Pei-de-la-Loire region . The department was created in 1790 and was named the Inner Loire, which it carried until 1957. The serial number is 44. The administrative center is Nantes . The population is 1,817,685 people (12th place among the departments, data 2010 ).

The Atlantic Loire is one of the five regions of the historical region of Brittany , i.e. the traditional language of the department was Gallo , as in all of Upper Brittany; however, in the west of the department, in the Gérande region, Breton was spoken until recently.

History
The Atlantic Loire is one of the first 83 departments established during the French Revolution in March 1790. It originated in the territory of the former province of Brittany .
