Story
Polynik , the brother of the resolute Antigone , the daughter of King Oedipus , who possesses great willpower, betrayed the family of Thebes and died in the struggle with his brother Eteocles , who defended the city. King Creon forbade the burial of a traitor and ordered to give his body to be torn apart by birds and dogs. Creon does not reckon with traditional generic laws, unlike its sister's daughter, Antigone. But she performed a religious rite of burial. For this, Creon ordered Antimonum to be bricked up in a cave. Antigone preferred death to obedience to the king and committed suicide. After that, the bridegroom of Antigone, the son of Creon, Hemon pierced himself with a dagger, in despair from the death of his son, Creon's wife Eurydice took the life. These misfortunes led Creon to recognize his insignificance and humility before the gods.
Reception
In the new time, the tragedy of Sophocles was rarely put on the stage, but served as a source of inspiration for many artists.
In 1943, Jean Anouy, based on the tragedy of Sophocles, wrote his "Antigonus" - the ancient drama became for Anuia the Aesop language that allowed him to invade the occupied Paris from the stage to disobey the invaders [1] .
Bertolt Brecht in 1948 handled for the modern scene and actualized the tragedy: if at Sophocles the conflict between Creon and Antigonus flared up after a victorious war, then at Brecht Creon started a war against Argos to distract people from the problems associated with the economic decline of his state [2] . He prepared the tragedy for a modern prologue: in April 1945, during the battles in Berlin , two sisters were faced with a choice whether to recognize the brother hanged by the SS , or deny it in the name of self-preservation [2] .
