Zavolzhsk is a city (since 1954 [2] ) in Russia , the administrative center of the Zavolzhsky District of the Ivanovo Region .

The population is 10 384 [1] people. (2017).
Geography
It is located on the left bank of the Volga River ( Gorky Reservoir ), opposite the city of Kineshma , with which the Kineshma Road Bridge connects, 105 km northeast of Ivanovo . 4 km from the eponymous railway station of the Northern Railway .
History
The village of Vladychnoye (Epiphany - according to the Church of the Epiphany) of the Kinesham district of Kostroma province has been known since at least the 17th century. In the mid- 19th century , a paper spinning and paper mill (later a fiber factory) was built on the territory of a modern city, and in 1871 a sulfuric acid plant (one of the oldest chemical enterprises in Russia, which turned 140 in 2011).
On February 20, 1934, the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee decided to establish a working village under the name Zavolzhye in the following settlements of the Kineshem region: at the chemical plant and factories Fira and Privolzhanka, Kuzhlyovka, Zhilinsky, Tikhomirovsky, Novy, Chirkovsky, Aleksinsky, Vladychny, Chirkov, Skriptsova, Zhilin, Urakov, Myasnev and Ryabininsky with the Volga hospital ” [3] .
With the receipt of the status of the city on October 4, 1954 it was renamed Zavolzhsk . October 9, 1968 became a district center.

Economics

Attractions
- One of the attractions of the city is the Church of the Epiphany ( 1778 ) [19] .
- On the outskirts of Zavolzhsk, in the village of Bredikhino, there was the estate of Pogost, astronomer F.A. Bredikhin , who was buried in the family crypt in 1904. The scientist’s memorial museum, located in this estate, burned down in 1994 [20] .

People associated with the city
Golodnov, Alexey Vasilievich (1925-2006) - Hero of the Soviet Union, lived in Zavolzhsk in the thirties and forties of the twentieth century [22] .
Ecology
The city has a moderately favorable environmental situation. This is primarily affected by the Globus-1 chemical plant and nuclear tests conducted in 1971 in the village of Galkino, which is thirty kilometers from the city [23] .
At the end of 2015, a complete rehabilitation of the radiation hazardous facility Globus-1 was carried out. Now it meets the requirements of sanitary standards [24] .
