Content
Cover Design
The inspiration for the album cover designers was the ending of the sci-fi novel “The End of Childhood” by English writer Arthur Clarke . It shows the moment when only descendants of human beings gathered in one place remained on Earth.
Initially, the group planned to hold a photo session in the Peruvian Nazca Valley, then Robert Plant suggested the Scottish island Staffa, and finally Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell from the design project Hipgnosis (previously famous for working with Pink Floyd ) persuaded Led Zeppelin to go to Ireland , to the “ Road of the Giants ” , a hill consisting of 40 thousand giant basalt columns.
Page described the cover idea as “a symbol of innocence, an expression of the idea that we are all beings who aspire to the promised heaven” [2] .
Contrary to numerous rumors, neither Courtney Love , nor Samantha Fox took part in the shooting. The six-year-old Samantha Gates and her four-year-old brother Stephen posed for the morning [3] [2] .
The photo on the cover is a collage of more than thirty shots. The children were woken at four o'clock in the morning and covered with golden and silvery paints when they finished their makeup, they were covered with auto enamel. Samantha later admitted that she had only one memory left of these shootings: she had prodrogla to the bone. Later she also appeared on the cover of Presence album (1976). Powell wanted to capture the sunny dawn, but for ten days it rained in Antrim, so I had to make a black and white collage and later paint it manually [4] .
The album cover did not contain any information about the artists or the title. In the USA, the heading was written on ribbons with which children's buttocks were glued. Despite this precaution, the record was banned in many states of the “ Bible belt ”. “Today we wouldn’t be allowed to do anything like this, they would immediately be accused of promoting pedophilia,” says Powell. “But we were hippies , walking naked was a completely trivial matter for us.” [5]
In 2011, the album cover ranked 28th in the list of the best album covers of all time, according to the version of the Music Radar online publication [6] .
