Iznik is a lake in northwestern Turkey in the province of Bursa , 125 km from Istanbul (65 km in a straight line). The lake is located in the zone of active North Anatolian folding. The area is 290 km² , the greatest depth is about 80 m. On the eastern side of the lake is the city of Iznik (ancient Nicaea ). To the north of it is the Samanli mountain range. The lake is surrounded by forests and vineyards. Water from the lake is used for irrigation of about 12 thousand hectares of agricultural land.

History
Its ancient name Ascanius or Lake Ascanius ( Ascanius ) came from the word Ashkuz from the Assyrian language , denoting the Scythians .
In Greek mythology, during the Trojan War, land near Lake Iznik was owned by Phrygians , who sent troops to help King Priam . According to the Iliad , the troops were led by the brothers Forky and Askaniy.
