Poverty of Philosophy (Marx)

Poverty of philosophy

“ Poverty of Philosophy. Response to the “Philosophy of Poverty” by Mr. Proudhon ”( German: Das Elend der Philosophie. Antwort auf Proudhons“ Philosophie des Elends ” ) - a book by K. Marx .

The work was written at the beginning of 1847 , as a criticism of the book P.-J. Proudhon, “ The System of Economic Contradictions, or the Philosophy of Poverty ” ( Système des contraditions économiques ou Philosophie de la misère , 1847) .

Published in early July in French by the publishers of Frank in Paris and Vogler in Brussels . During the life of Marx, work was no longer reprinted. German first printed in 1885 in Stuttgart.

This is the first printed work of Marx in which he, in the form of a criticism of Proudhon, set out the starting points of his economic doctrine and, at the same time, the foundations of the materialistic understanding of history created by him and Engels . In the work, Marx for the first time directly formulates the correlation of productive forces and production relations; gives a materialistic explanation of economic categories as a theoretical expression, an abstraction of the social relations of production. Marx creates the prerequisites for a future theory of surplus value . Marx himself wrote about his book:

"... This book contains in its infancy what, after twenty years of work, has turned into a theory developed in Capital . [one]"
