At the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Bacon only participated in the 1,500-meter race , in which he finished last in ninth place. At the unofficial Olympic Games of 1906 in Athens, he became fifth at a distance of 400 meters and 6th at 800 meters .
At the 1908 Games in London, Bacon only participated in the 400m hurdles . He won the competition, setting the first official world record.
