Ilber Ortayli ( Turkish İlber Ortaylı ; born in 1947 , Bregenz , Austria ) is a Turkish historian of Crimean Tatar origin.

Biography
Born in a refugee camp in Austria, from the age of two he lives in Turkey. He graduated from the University of Ankara ( 1968 ), then trained at the University of Chicago under the leadership of Khalil Inaldzhik . Since 1978 , after defending his thesis, he taught at the School of Political Studies of the University of Ankara. In 1982 , he resigned in protest against the new state educational policy (after the coup d'état of 1980 ), worked in different countries. Since 1989 , again a professor at the University of Ankara. In 2005–2012, he held the position appointed director of the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul [1] .
Author of a number of books on the history of the Ottoman Empire .
Awards
- Officer of the Order of Arts and Literature ( 2011 , France ).
- Pushkin Medal ( November 29, 2007 , Russia ) - for his great contribution to the dissemination, study of the Russian language and the preservation of cultural heritage, the rapprochement and mutual enrichment of cultures of nations and nationalities [2] .
